English players now diving "masters", says Arsenal's Wenger

English players now diving

Responding to Mauricio Pochettino's comparison between match tactics and diving, Wenger said during his pre-match press conference on Thursday: "I am convinced he wanted to say tricking your opponent is to be clever".

Arsène Wenger appeared to aim a dig at Tottenham Hotspur's players this morning by claiming that the English have become the "masters" of diving. "That is down to the referees and I think that sometimes, at normal speed, it is very hard to determine".

"I remember there were tremendous cases here when foreign players did it, but I must say the English players have learned very quickly and they might even be the masters now".

"I don't encourage my players to dive".

Arsenal will travel to Wembley this Saturday to contest the north London derby, in a must-win fixture for both teams that could be a major boost in the fight for a Champions League place.

Petr Cech however will likely start despite a number of errors so far this season, and I believe that I'm not amongst the minority in thinking that we need to bring in a replacement for the former Chelsea shot-stopper come the summer.

Wenger also hopes to have Nacho Monreal and Danny Welbeck available for the game. Sometimes you want your players to be intelligent, they have played a little bit with the rules, they make more of it on the penalty case.

Monreal was substituted at half-time during Arsenal's win over Everton but the newspaper says it was only due to illness so the Spaniard is set to recover in time to face Spurs.

The sixth-placed Gunners are looking to complete the double over Spurs on Sunday, and victory would close the gap on their rivals to a point.
