The officials put death toll at eight and more than 200 people were injured in the natural disaster.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday confirmed that a Filipina is missing after a 6.4 magnitude quake struck Hualien County in Taiwan.

Tuesday night's quake in the eastern city of Hualien has left at least nine people dead and over 260 injured.

A hotel and other buildings collapsed or tilted mainly in the city of Hualien near the quake's focus.

Rescuers in Taiwan continued their search for survivors in a dangerously tilted building Thursday, more than a day after it was damaged in an natural disaster that shook the island's east coast and killed at least 10 people.

China Central Television reported that more than 40 of the missing people were trapped in the Yunmen Cuiti building, a 12-storey apartment building.

Hualien County disaster response center initially reported that about 225 individuals were injured in the quake after they were trapped inside the damaged structures.

The epicenter of the quake was about 5.9 miles deep and located off the coast of Taiwan, roughly 13 miles from Hualien, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

But fire department staff at the site told AFP at least four bodies had been pulled out of the building in the day.

One witness said the building sunk to the ground due to the quake.

Engineers have attempted to secure it using concrete blocks and steel, but efforts have been complicated by ongoing tremors and rainfall.

Hualien Mayor Fu Kun-chi said the number of people missing was now close to 60, although an exact figure was not provided.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said his country was dispatching a rescue team to help in the search effort. Residents were directed to shelters where they were provided with food, water and a place to sleep.

Chen Chih-wei, 80, said he was sleeping in his apartment on the top floor of the building when the quake struck.

Among the several badly damaged buildings was a hospital, local media reports.
