Speechwriter resigns after abuse allegations

Porter, Mr. Trump's staff secretary, may have done a bang-up job delivering classified documents to the President - without the benefit of an Federal Bureau of Investigation security clearance - but his past, unbeknownst to the President, has thrown the White House into chaos.

The Washington Post's Elise Viebeck reports that David Sorensen, a speechwriter, is resigning.

Mr Porter, 40, was then allowed to serve as an influential gatekeeper to Mr Trump until this week, when the two women went public with allegations.

Instead, Trump said, 'As you probably know, he says he's innocent.

Trump was so infuriated by the ordeal he even phoned Reince Priebus, the previous chief of staff who was ousted after he also attracted Trump's ire, to vent about Kelly, The New York Times reported.

Porter has denied the abuse allegations. He said the abuse allegations would not automatically disqualify Porter. "That being said, I think the White House has acknowledged that they could have handled it better". And I think you have to remember that.

"It's obviously a tough time for him, he did a very good job when he was in the White House and we hope he has a wonderful career, and hopefully he will have a great career ahead of him", Trump said.

Trump tells reporters at a surprise appearance Friday that former White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter did "a very good job while he was in the White House" and adds: "We wish him well".

Kelly tells reporters he learned Tuesday night that staff secretary Rob Porter, the chief of staff's right-hand man, had allegedly abused two ex-wives. But the aftershocks of his resignation continue amid concerns about his access to classified information.

She was forced to take out a temporary protective order in 2010 to keep Porter away from her. The reports also included a photo showing one of his exes with a black eye.

A White House spokesman said when confronted, Sorenson denied the allegations but resigned on Friday. "There is no place for domestic violence in our society". Hicks has been dating Porter and helped prepare a rather fawning statement in defense of him on behalf of the President.

The National Organization for Women slammed Kelly's statements on Porter and called on him to resign as well.

The comments were apparently irksome enough to Trump that he tweeted out a contradiction: "The Wall is the Wall, it has never changed or evolved from the first day I conceived of it".

"Over this past week, we have just seen abusers of the highest ranks within the Oval Offic", Biden said.

One of them, Jennifer Willoughby, posted about it in detail on Instagram in April 2017 and wrote of Mr Porter: "When I tried to get help, I was counselled to consider carefully how what I said might affect his career".
