The suspect was wounded and taken to a hospital, a city spokeswoman said.

At least one police officer was shot and killed after a shooting occurred in Westerville Saturday afternoon. "They were pillars in our department".

Police said a suspect is in custody, but they provided no other details. The 17-year-old says police often were called to the home.

Westerville sits about 16 miles north of downtown Columbus, Ohio.

Mobitzer calls the 39-year-old Morelli and 54-year-old Joering "true American heroes". Reports say the suspect was also shot but their condition was not immediately known.

CBS Columbus affiliate WBNS posted images that showed multiple police cruisers at the scene.

News of the loss of the law enforcement officers' lives rippled around the state of OH and the nation.

The Fraternal Order of Police of OH asks anyone who wishes to support the families to donate at GoFundMe.com/FOPLodge9HelpFund.

"We are deeply saddened to report that one of our officers has been killed in the line of duty", the City of Westerville tweeted Saturday.
