Florida shooting: USA airlines join other firms in dropping NRA

The list of companies terminating their partnerships with the National Rifle Association is growing as public outcry against the gun group escalates following the deadliest mass shooting at a public high school in US history.

"It doesn't surprise me".

In light of this move as a reaction to mass shootings, NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre asserts, "The NRA does care".

The National Rifle Association released a statement on Saturday saying companies "have made a decision to punish NRA membership in a shameful display of political and civic cowardice".

First National Bank of Omaha, the nation's largest privately owned bank, now offers NRA members a $40 cash-back bonus and the option to enroll in an NRA Visa Card.

The mass killing focused renewed attention on the NRA, which is credited with blocking gun-control measures for years through millions of dollars in political campaign contributions and pressure from its large membership base. "I was an NRA shooting instructor for the police department", King explained.

Hertz's program offered card carrying NRA members up to 25% off daily base rates and "additional program benefits", according to the rental vehicle company's website; similarly, Avis offered up to 25% off.

Symantec, MetLife, Enterprise are among big brands cutting ties with the NRA.

Internet-security platform Symantec said it is dropping a discount program that let NRA members buy Symantec's LifeLock identity-theft service cheap, Reuters reported. Names of companies with NRA associations had begun circulating widely Thursday under the hashtag #BoycottNRA. TrueCar, Avis and other companies with NRA relationships didn't immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch inquiries about their plans for their own partnerships with the group.

Angry student survivors of the shooting have confronted politicians from state lawmakers to U.S. President Donald Trump himself, demanding stricter gun control laws. "The Supreme Court has upheld reasonable restrictions on gun ownership, but the NRA and the firearms industry continue to invoke the Second Amendment to stall action on gun violence".

"A prominent private banking company, top vehicle rental chains and a pair of major insurance companies are cutting ties with the National Rifle Association amid a social media movement to "#BoycottNRA".

Chubb said in a statement that it "provided notice of our intent to discontinue participation in the NRA Carry Guard insurance program" three months ago.

ThinkProgress, a liberal website that describes itself as an editorially independent project of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, claimed credit for bringing attention to the corporate NRA connections. Rental auto company Hertz will no longer offer a discount program to NRA members and First National Bank of Omaha said it will not renew a co-branded credit card it has with the NRA.

In addition, the vehicle rental company Enterprise said its three brands would end a discount program for NRA members.

Now, NRA members will still be able to purchase NRA-branded prepaid Visa debit cards because those are available through a different provider.

Hey @FedEx why do you support the NRA?
