Walmart Introducing Meal Kits in 2K-plus Stores

250 Walmart stores now offer ten different meals to hungry shoppers and the retailer plans to expand the service to 2000 locations by the end of 2018.

The meal push for Walmart may yield quite a lot from it because nearly all retail chains have the deli departments however only a sizeable number of shoppers would opt to visit the sections despite a continued supply for the same.

Walmart is rolling out new meal kits in a move to provide simple-to-cook, at-home dinner options. Options include preportioned cooking kits, kits to go with precooked rotisserie chicken, and other heat-up options-all ready in less than 15 minutes.

The company says it will start selling prepared "meal-kits" at stores across the country. The meals will also be available via Walmart's Online Grocery Pickup where customers can place thir order online at lunch and pick it up as soon as dinner time.

The four pre-portioned meals are steak Dijon, basil garlic chicken, pork Florentine and sweet chili chicken stir fry.

Several companies already offer meal kits, both online and in stores.

For Walmart, the meal push also may let it get more out of its deli section.

"More than 80 percent of Americans don't know what they will have for dinner tonight", said Tyler Lehr, a Walmart senior vice president. Albertsons Cos., the owner of Safeway, Carrs and other supermarkets, bought online meal-kit service Plated past year to sell the kits at its 2,300 stores. The Walmart website has an expanded assortment of meal kits and other specialty items like snack boxes. Livingston doubts Walmart's meal-kit offerings will have a significant impact, questioning whether the retailer can "pull this off properly". "So these are products we're very comfortable with".
