Amazon's Alexa is creeping people out with her creepy, unprompted cackle

After reports about its Alexa-enabled devices laughing out loud for no apparent reason - and weirding people out in the process - Amazon offered up further explanation Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement provided to the Verge, a representative for Amazon said the company is "aware" of the problem and is "working to fix it".

Other users have since come forward with their own instances of random Alexa laughter.


"So Alexa made a decision to laugh randomly while I was in the kitchen", the user CaptHandlebar wrote.

If you thought it was creepy having Amazon's Alexa personal assistant listening on your conversations, wait until you hear this. "After the third request, Alexa stopped responding and instead did an evil laugh", the user wrote.

That said, most users on social media reaction with humour, drawing parallels with HAL 9000 from the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Amazon sold about 11 million Echo devices containing Alexa by the end of 2016.
