Jose Mourinho hatches summer transfer plan based on key Manchester United star

United's impressive fightback from 2-0 down on Monday to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 maintained their slender two-point lead over Liverpool in the battle for the runners-up spot behind runaway leaders City.

Jose Mourinho is ready for another summer of change at Old Trafford as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, reports claim.

Nemanja Matic bailed out Mourinho's men with a stunning stoppage-time strike in London but another three points papered over the cracks in the latest in a series of unconvincing performances from United. For them it will be maybe a good point but, for us, we never play for a point.

Jose Mourinho has talked up the significance of Manchester United's crunch showdown with Liverpool FC in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

"I enjoy playing against big top strikers and the biggest challenge for me is when you have Mo Salah and [Sadio] Mané at the training ground and then you know what you are".

While the Paul Pogba situation has been smoothed after the French star was left out for consecutive games and publicly criticised by the manager, sources close to the situation say it is still someway up in the air.

For all the game is actually worth on paper, with a higher league finish on offer, the chance to get one over an immortal rival is perhaps the more tantalising prospect on hand here.

The match against Liverpool is the first of three games in eight days for United at Old Trafford that will define their season.

Liverpool FC, meanwhile, managed to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by beating FC Porto 5-0 on aggregate on Tuesday night.

But it has been made known to the player and his representatives that United would back Mourinho in any future flashpoint.

The Chilean has scored just once since moving from Arsenal in January.

He added: "They need the points, definitely".
