SIT to probe Naveen's 'links' with ultra-right

The 3rd Court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate has given the SIT custody of Kumar for 5 days.

"Yes, Praveen is a suspect in the case but we have not included his name in the FIR yet".

Six months after the murder of Lankesh, Karnataka police arrested alleged gunrunner KT Naveen Kumar, who was taken into police custody on March 2 for interrogation in connection with the case. The SIT had Naveen ride a bike in its custody.

An unidentified gunman had on September 5 a year ago shot dead Gauri, who was known for her writing against communalism. A case under the Arms Act was then registered against him and he was remanded to judicial custody by a court. She was the editor of the Gauri Lankesh Patrike, a tabloid known for "anti-establishment" views. He is reportedly linked to the Sanatan Sanstha outfit and its affiliate the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. An SIT officer involved in the probe countered, "If Naveen Kumar is not associated with Sanatan Sanstha, and is an insignificant person, why have all these lawyers been sent to fight on his behalf?" The SIT had found a Kannada translation of a book by Jayanth Athavale, the founder of Sanathan Sanstha and a Hindu alamanac, published by Sanathan Prabha along with Athavale's photograph along with 10 bullets and other items when they raided his residence in Manya and Birur.

"Lankesh in the city past year".

The SIT has chose to transfer the case of Kumar's plot to eliminate K S Bhagawan to the Mysuru police.

"He is Naveen's associate who hails from Maharashtra, and we suspect he played active roles not just in the murder of Gauri but also in planning an attack on writer K.S. Bhagavan", said an SIT official. The court did not consider the police's plea to include charges of attempt to murder and conspiracy in the case since investigations had revealed that Kumar was allegedly at advanced stage of executing the killing of K S Bhagawan, an outspoken writer, rationalist and critic of some Hindu religious beliefs.

Police are trying to verify whether Kumar was seen on CCTV cameras conducting a recce on a motorcycle around the journalist-activist's home the day she was shot down.
