Kirk Cousins likely to sign with Vikings

The expectation is he takes at least 1 - maybe 2 - visits before signing.

By signing a fully guaranteed contract, Cousins has all the power.

That puts the Arizona Cardinals behind the eight-ball in their search for a starting quarterback. According to Rapoport, Cousins will have dinner with Vikings coaches and other personnel Wednesday, night, then visit the team's new facility in Eagan on Thursday. While they could draft a quarterback at the No. 15 overall pick in the draft, they might want to get a veteran starter and draft a project-type quarterback they could develop in the second or third round. He finished with 4,093 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Meanwhile, McCown is 38 and coming off a broken hand that ended his year with the New York Jets after Week 14. Bridgewater and Sam Bradford are also expected to sign elsewhere. The Vikings have been targeting Cousins for weeks and did not make much of an effort to retain Keenum.

The team did acquire Jermaine Kearse last season from the Seattle Seahawks to add an experienced receiver with a winning pedigree to help mold the Jets receiving unit, which should be a big help for Bridgewater.

Assuming Cousins, who turns 30 on August 19, signs with the Vikings and starts in Week 1 of the regular season, he would be the Vikings' sixth different opening day starter in seven years at quarterback.

After sitting out the playoffs in each of the last two years following their Super Bowl 50 triumph, the Broncos have apparently found their next signal-caller.

Such a deal is the first of its kind in NFL history and will make Cousins the highest paid quarterback in the league barely over a month after the 49ers gave that distinction to their quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. Ponder, who started the first games of the 2012 and 2013 seasons, remains the most recent Vikings quarterback to hold the job after the preseason for two consecutive years. However, this is not what makes the Vikings one of the highest contenders in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes.

Two people familiar with the contract say Drew Brees has agreed to a two-year, $50 million extension with the New Orleans Saints.

"I haven't had the chance to pick where I'm going to play since 2007 when I chose to go to Michigan State, so I'm looking forward to that opportunity", Cousins said in Minnesota the week of the Super Bowl during an appearance on SiriusXM satellite radio.

The Eagles remain the clear favorite to win the NFC in 2018, even if the Vikings do win the Cousins Sweepstakes.
