Tiger Woods: Odds slashed as American cut to favourite for Masters 2018

Tiger Woods: Odds slashed as American cut to favourite for Masters 2018

Woods is teeing it up this week at Bay Hill for the first time since 2013 looking to add to his record eight wins in the late Arnold Palmer's tournament. In fact, it's probably best to just skip the whole dang day and don't even put up with the pretense of looking productive.

Then on Thursday, Woods kept his name on the leaderboard all day at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and capped his round off with a massive 71-foot birdie on one of his final holes.

His Valspar performance last week filled both golf fans and Woods with hope as the Masters, the first major of the year, nears next month.

"Golf is amusing game, my putter wasn't working at all last week, I actually hit the ball alright through the two rounds I played but just couldn't get a birdie and had to go do some work on my putting and got that going".

I peel back the down comforter, it is revealed that I am already wearing a shirt, a polo shirt. "I think it's clear that people are really interested to see how the Phils [Mickelson], how the Tigers, how they are going to perform against these great young players".

Stenson caught fire on his homeward run with four successive birdies from the 10th, a sole bogey on the 14th where he drove into trees, and then back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16, but the Swede's brilliance was still outshone by Woods's on-going comeback following spinal fusion surgery.

Anything that can dim the spotlight's glare can only help his cause and, while a ninth win at Bay Hill would rightly ramp up the pre-Masters hype surrounding Woods (no bad thing for McIlroy's cause), he knows he needs to start showing some form soon. "The golf course is playing hard". "But I'm not complaining, it went in".

Jimmy Walker, Rickie Fowler and Bryson DeChambeau are in a tie for fourth at five under.

The Masters takes place April 5-8 at Augusta National Golf Club.

"It's just golf", he shrugged. "The narrative has completely flipped from how you guys ask me questions, and I just wanted to remind you guys that it wasn't that long ago that you were asking a different set of questions and that you need to enjoy it. Sometimes it helps because you're not overdoing it".
