Authorities Investigate Motive in Maryland School Shooting

Cpl. Julie Yingling, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said Wednesday morning that there was no new information to share in the investigation.

He said he saw a classmate with a gun to his own head as a school resource officer rounded a corner at the southern Maryland school.

"There is an indication that a prior relationship existed between the shooter and the female victim", said Sheriff Tim Cameron.

"It is hard for us not to see her shining, smiling face right now, and to see her light up the room with her presence", Willey's family said in a statement. "This is our worst nightmare". "The notion that it can't happen here is no longer a notion". A female and male student, ages 16 and 14, were injured and hospitalized.

A 15-year-old student shot 16 people - killing two other 15-year-olds - at Marshall County High School, authorities said.

Gaskill is also a member of the local SWAT team and joined the sheriff's office six years ago. Every student in our country deserves to attend school without fear for his or her safety.

"There has been an incident at Great Mills High School", the St Mary's County Sheriff wrote on Twitter.

The shooting came four days before the March For Our Lives - partly organised by student survivors of the Parkland rampage - takes place in Washington to urge lawmakers to pass tighter gun control laws.

Politicians responded swiftly to the Maryland shooting, acknowledging that it increased the pressure for action.

"We sympathize. We empathize". We have moments of silence.

"It looks as though the SRO [school resource officer] did exactly what the SRO is trained to do, and yet we still have a tragic loss of life", he said. "Wringing our hands is not enough".

In the Parkland shooting, school resource deputy Scot Peterson never entered the building after taking a position outside. It's unclear how Rollins obtained the weapon.

Attempts to reach the shooter's family were unsuccessful.

Authorities began evacuating people from the school later this morning and busing them to a reunification center at nearby Leonardtown High School, St. Mary's County Public Schools said. A 14-year-old boy was also wounded in the incident.

"Austin was a nice kid". But that is unlikely to be the case until Congress takes meaningful action.

The attack, which lasted less than a minute, ended after the school resource officer, Deputy 1st Class Sheriff Blaine Gaskill, ran inside the building and confronted Rollins, with both firing a single shot nearly simultaneously.

Cameron said Rollins pulled out a semiautomatic Glock handgun in the hallway as classes were getting underway at 7:55 the school of 1,600.

"You go to the sound of gunfire", he said.

The news site said the school principal said in a letter to parents that the school and law enforcement assessed the threat and that it "has not been validated at this time". Two other students were critically injured.

In one example, in Arapahoe County, Colorado, a school resource officer was credited with helping to end a 2013 fatal high school shooting after he approached the gunman's position in the library. Investigators say Rollings fired his semi-automatic handgun at the same time.
