London Overtakes US With High Murder Rate

Less than half an hour after the alarm was raised in Tottenham, police received reports of gunfire around three miles away in Walthamstow, east London.

Sarah Castro, of Safer London, a charity working to prevent gang violence, said her staff were "shell-shocked" by the recent violence. "She didn't know what to do".

She added: "She didn't deserve that".

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said late previous year that the declining crime figures in New York City can be attributed to "precision" policing against key offenders, initiatives that target gangs, and aggressive investigations into crimes committed with guns.

Talking about the fact Tanesha was believed to be caught in cross-fire, he said: "If you are going to shoot at someone shouldn't you make sure you are pointing (the gun) at the right person?"

He says the force has faced more than £600 million (688 million euros, US$844 million) in central government grant cuts since 2011, leading to the large-scale loss of police staff and facilities.

"This is a horrific and distressing incident", Creasy, the member of parliament for the area, said on Facebook appealing for witnesses.

In the Walthamstow shooting, police said they were called to Markhouse Road at 22:00 following reports of gun fire.

"Victim 1 - was found suffering from gunshot injuries and Victim 2 - with stab injuries", said the police.

No arrests have been made for either incident. He has been taken to an east London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Croydon Central MP Sarah Jones, who chairs the all-party parliamentary group on knife crime, told the BBC's Today programme that the United Kingdom should follow New York's example in tackling violent crime.

The city's murder rate has now surpassed that of NY for the first time in modern history as the scourge of knife crime continues.

Crime rates are still high in NY however, despite dropping dramatically in recent years.

There have been 10 fatal stabbings in London in the last 19 days, following on from the 80 fatal stabbings recorded in the city a year ago.

Meanwhile, the number of crimes in total in London have been increasing along with murders.

Other friends told how they tried to comfort Tanisha in her last moments, staying by her side after the fatal shooting.
