Bollywood Star Salman Khan Sentenced To Five Years In Prison

Naseem Khan said that even though the court had convicted Salman and sentenced him to 5-year in jail, the Bollywood actor was a 'farishta (angel)' to him.

Earlier today, the court acquitted Salman's co-actors Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam and Tabu who were also accused in the case.

This is the fourth case filed against Khan in connection with poaching wild animals during the filming of the popular movie, Hum Saath Saath Hain.

The court of chief judicial magistrate (Jaipur rural) had sentenced Salman Khan to five years imprisonment in connection with almost 20-year-old blackbuck poaching case on Monday.

Bollywood's worries stem from the fact that most of Salman's films gross more than INR2 billion, making him one of the "most bankable stars" presently active in Bollywood.

Preity Zinta also met Salman Khan's sisters Alvira Agnihotri and Arpita Khan Sharma and offered her support to them in the hard times.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif slammed the five-year jail term given to Bollywood actor Salman Khan as "discriminatory".

The moment Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri pronounced the verdict in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, Salman Khan was standing alone in the courtroom with his sisters Alvira, Arpita and bodyguard Shera.

In his arguments, defence counsel Mahesh Bora said there were various loopholes in the investigation.

The actor was also fined Rs. 10,000.

After a thorough medical check-up, the actor was given a blanket and allotted ward number 2 to spend the night.

In 2016, however, the Rajasthan government appealed the acquittal.

Demanding maximum punishment in the case under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, the prosecution had argued that Khan was a repeat offender.

According to Desai, the sessions court will hear the appeal for suspension of the sentence tomorrow morning.

Chogaram Bishnoi, a member of the community, told reporters that he had seen Khan stopping his jeep and shooting the two blackbucks in a village near Jodhpur in October 1998.

On the other hand, public prosecutor Pokar Ram opposed the bail plea and said there is a lot of followers of the actor and in spite of the wrong actions done by him, he has been given relief.
