Commonwealth Games: Australia assured of medal in boxing without throwing punch

Meawhile, on a disappointing note, India's hockey campaign was off to a disappointing start at the Commonwealth Games after the country's women's team was upstaged 2-3 by a lower-ranked Wales in a Group A clash here on Thursday.

Campbell anchored the Australian quartet, which also included her sister Bronte, Shayna Jack and Emma McKeon, to clock three minutes, 30.05 seconds and beat their previous record of 3:30.65 from the Rio Olympics.

It was Australia's second gold medal Thursday, the opening night of competition at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

The home quartet crossed almost six seconds ahead of their English challengers, striking a blow in the battle dubbed by "the Ashes on wheels" by local media, a reference to the two nations' fierce cricket rivalry.

Wales had a day to remember when Anna Hursey, the Games' youngest competitor at just 11, won a doubles table tennis match in the women's team event against India, together with partner Charlotte Carey.

"I thought, "someone must be doing something special here" and I thought we were being caught, but it was us breaking the world record".

"I think I'm still in shock".

"I probably feel more emotion here than in Rio because the whole crowd is cheering for you", Horton said. I don't know how that happened. After sitting in third for the first 200m, Horton flicked the switch to run down teammate Jack McLoughlin [silver] and England's Guy James [bronze].

Wilby's storming final few meters gave him the title ahead of Scotland's defending champion Ross Murdoch and Australia's Matt Wilson, while Willmott ended the reign of Hannah Miley in the 400m medley. Blair Evans of Australia took the bronze.

They won 10 medals, with just one gold to Emily Seebohm in the women's 200m backstroke, to finish eighth on the table - their worst position since 1991 - and the Commonwealth Games has been seen as a step to regroup for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Chad le Clos of South Africa, now the gold-medal favorite in the race with Proud out, was the fastest semifinalist to quality for Friday's final.

"I've raced against Hannah in every meet and I've been second every time", Willmott told reporters.
