2 killed, 20 injured in delivery van attack in Germany

The attacker had been charged with hit-and-run, fraud and making threats between 2015 and 2016, according to prosecutor Elke Adomeit.

"While the German authorities have not yet announced a motive for this cowardly attack on innocent people, we condemn it regardless, and pledge any support from the United States government that Germany may need".

But investigators have yet to release the name of 48-year-old attacker, who killed himself Saturday after plowing into a crowd outside a bar in Muenster.

The interior ministry said at least 30 people were injured.

Germany has been on especially high alert for jihadist attacks after several claimed by the Islamic State group.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also reacted to the attack and is devastated by the attack.

He didn't elaborate on how many Dutch were injured or how serious those injuries were.

Witnesses said people ran away screaming from the city square after the crash.

Large portions of the city center remained shut down hours later, as helicopters hovered in the sky and police officers with large rifles blocked streets.

The perpetrator is reported to have had contact with far-right extremists, but no evidence thus far has shown that he was an extremist himself.

"This was a frightful and sad day for the people of Munster, all of Germany. and also the people of the Netherlands, who were sitting here and became victims", he said. "The investigations are being conducted at full speed and on all fronts".

"So far there are no indications of a possible background for the crime", senior public prosecutor Martin Botzenhardt said in a joint statement with Muenster police.

The premier of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, was also present, and said that Saturday had been "a awful, tragic day for the people of Münster".

"We are pressing hard on our investigation into all possible avenues".

Police also said they found a suspicious object in the van that they were examining to see if it was unsafe.

It was reported by local media that the perpetrator suffered from psychological problems.

Police during a search found a weapon - a Kalashnikov. The city was buzzing on one of the first warm spring days of the year and people were sitting outside the Kiepenkerl when he drove into the bar's tables with such a vengeance that the vehicle only came to a stop when it hit the wall of the pub.

It happened as people were eating outside a restaurant in the city's historic centre just before 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
