Encounter between forces, terrorists in J&K's Kulgam, 1 jawan killed

A police spokesman on official twitter account of J&K police tweeted, "Cordon and Search operation being carried out at Wani Mohalla #Khudwani, Wanpoh, District Kulgam turns into an encounter".

The doctor added that the hospital received 30 injured persons having bullets, pellets and other injuries due to teargas shells.


One Army personnel identified as Sepoy of army namely S. Gunakar Roy No. 16121860/K who was injured in the gunfight succumbed to his injuries. It is believed that 2-3 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists are hiding in the area. "They have been sent to Srinagar for specialized treatment", the police officer said. Later one of the them, an Army jawan, succumbed to injuries, the officials said.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended internet mobile service in many parts of the Valley while the train service in south Kashmir has been suspended.


As the gun battle raged, locals poured out of their homes and threw stones at security forces who fired in order to disperse crowds. All the educational institutions have also been ordered to remain closed, "The area is cordoned off and the protesters have been pushed back to prevent further collateral damage". Intermittent firing is going on between militants and security forces.

The three civilians killed in action by the security forces have been identified as Sharjeel Ahmad Sheikh, Bilal Ahmed and Faisal Elahi. "After conducting thorough search of the debris and nearby areas, we could not recover the bodies of the militants", official sources told UNI.


The incident has happened at a time when the civilian and militant killings have vitiated the atmosphere in Kashmir.
