Trump Now Sees Qatar as an Ally Against Terrorism

Still, as Trump praised the emir as a "great gentleman" and a "friend of mine", it was unclear how much of the warm reception was due to Trump's time-honored habit of chiding his opponents from afar but then softening when they come face to face. He mentioned Qatar had traditionally supported terror teams at a "excessive stage".

According to a statement of Pentagon spokesperson Dana White, Mattis and Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani discussed mutual security interests, including the campaign to defeat the Islamic State (IS). "Enhanced features will be upgraded from time-to-time after receiving the feedback from industry veterans".

Trump says in the Oval Office that "we're making sure that terrorism funding is stopped" in the region.

Since Trump's past criticism of Qatar, the country has engaged in an aggressive campaign to rebuild its reputation in the USA and prove it is a dependable ally.


The leaders are set to hold a meeting and working lunch that the White House said would focus on strengthening ties, including security and economic issues.

Despite the past tensions, there were signs that Trump was warming to the Qataris.

Still, Qatar's neighbors are isolating the country, diplomatically and financially. Qatar denies that cost however has taken steps to deal with US considerations. Over there they're boosting Iran even though the Iranians are waging wars across the Middle East.

The pro-Israel community also will be closely monitoring the upcoming White House powwow.

As a longstanding ally and funder of the terror group Hamas, Qatar is in a position to help rein in the group's ongoing terror activities, which includes a recent effort to swarm the Israeli border with militants in a bid to spark armed conflict.

Secretary Mattis and Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani affirmed their shared commitment to continued security cooperation.

The emir said, "We do not and we will not tolerate with people who fund terrorism. This matter should end immediately", Thani said.
