Oscar-winning director Milos Forman no more

Actor Michael Douglas gave Forman a second chance, hiring him to direct "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", which Douglas was co-producing. His best known works tell someone else's story, from adaptations of Hair (a Broadway music) and Amadeus (a stage play) to biopics about Hustler founder Larry Flynt (The People vs. Larry Flynt) and comedian Andy Kaufman (Man on the Moon).

He died on Friday in the U.S. after a short illness, according to his wife Martina. "I heard from (Forman's wife) Martina Forman very early this morning letting me know Milos passed away at Danbury Hospital near his home in Warren, Connecticut", his friend and agent Dennis Aspland said. The director is a two-time Oscar victor for the films "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus". Forman also served as the jury president at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985 and the Venice Film Festival in 2000. He became a citizen of the United States in the 1970s.

Born as Jan Tomas Forman in the Czech Republic, February 18, 1932, he moved to the USA from his native country for creative pursuits.

The Czech-born film-maker, who was 86, was one of a small number of foreign directors to enjoy lasting commercial and critical success in Hollywood.

His father died at Buchenwald while his mother was killed in Auschwitz after both of them were accused of taking part in an anti-Nazi resistance.

After his first USA film, 1971's "Taking Off", flopped, Forman didn't get a chance to direct a major feature again for years. Forman told Los Angeles Times in a 2004 interview.

Amadeus, starring Tom Hulce as Mozart, which was filmed in Forman's native Czechoslovakia, won eight Oscars, including best picture and director. This also included an Oscar for Forman in the Category of Best Director.

- 1958-62: Married to actress Jana Brejchova. The two divorced after four years, and Forman went on to have twin sons with his second wife, actress Vera Kresadlova. The two had another set of twins, who the director named after Andrew Kaufman and Jim Carrey.
