President Trump And Japanese Prime Minister Abe's Press Conference

Trump, who unexpectedly agreed to the Kim talks last month, has pressed forward with his plans, despite concerns from regional allies such as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who arrived in Florida this week to warn Trump that past U.S. talks with North Korea have failed. But Mr. Trump made news Tuesday when he said the US and North Korea have had "direct" talks at "extremely high levels," fueling questions.

Trump also said he hoped a planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to discuss denuclearization would be successful but that he would walk out if it was not.

Trump, who was addressing reporters with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his side, said: "We will work very hard on that issue and we will work hard to try and bring those folks back - very, very hard".

The Trumps are hosting the Abes for a two-day summit at Mar-a-Lago so we expect Melania to continue stepping out in her most elegant ensembles.

The Washington Post first reported Pompeo's meeting with Kim, saying it took place just over two weeks ago during Easter weekend.

"If we can get along with China, if we can get along with Russian Federation and if we can get along with Japan, that's a good thing", said Trump.

Abe, meanwhile, said he told Trump this week that North Korea wouldn't be rewarded simply for opening dialogue with the United States.

Two officials confirmed the trip to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Trump said five locations for the summit are under consideration, but he would not list them.

The talks came amid news that CIA Director Mike Pompeo had recently traveled in secret to North Korea to meet with Kim ahead of a U.S. But in a briefing Tuesday afternoon, Trump admitted, "We're going to sneak out tomorrow morning and play a round of golf, if possible, if we have the time".

Trump said the US and North Korea are holding direct talks at "extremely high levels" in preparation for a possible summit with Kim, expected to take place by early June.

Kim is expected to meet South Korea´s President Moon Jae-in next week for landmark talks at which discussion of a formal peace declaration is now on the cards.

During dinner, Melania and Akie were seated next to each other and exchanged in conversation, while President Trump and Prime Minister Abe did the same. "President Trump and I were in full agreement".

South Korea and a USA -led United Nations force are technically still at war with North Korea after the Korean War ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.
