Palestinians killed in attempted infiltration from Gaza

Forty-nine Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since protests and clashes began along the Gaza border on March 30, and hundreds of others have been wounded by gunfire.

Updated: Israeli soldiers killed, on Sunday afternoon, two unarmed Palestinian protesters near the eastern border of the southern city of Khan Younis.

Israel says the protests have been organised by Hamas - an Islamist group that controls Gaza and is sworn to Israel's destruction - to provide cover for attacks, and that most of the dead were militants.

The Israeli Air Force fired, on Sunday at dawn, at least one missile into an area, north of Beit Lahia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, causing damage.

A Palestinian source told Haaretz that all signs pointed to an explosion resulting from the handling of explosives inside a building and that there were signs that the casualties were operatives in Hamas' military wing.

Israel has faced a barrage of global criticism for its conduct, the European Union and United Nations chief Antonio Guterres have called for an independent investigation into the deaths, but the Jewish State has rejected the idea.

The Israeli army said that has nothing to do with this incident.

The Palestinians were carrying a camera, an axe, a fence cutter, gloves and an oxygen mask, according to the IDF.

The statement was unclear about whether the Palestinians managed to get into Israel.

Six people have been killed in an unexplained explosion in Gaza.

On the following day, Palestinians mark the "nakba", or catastrophe, to commemorate the anniversary of their mass uprooting during the 1948 war over Israel's creation.

Gaza media initially reported the blast as a "work accident", suggesting the men were killed when explosives they were preparing detonated prematurely. It failed to elaborate or offer some evidence. "We will not stop until the Jews leave our land, and Allah willing we return to it", a Hamas official declares, standing with fellow terrorists holding a kerosene-filled bottle for use in preparing another IED.
