Excitement builds as first 'US Embassy' road signs go up in Jerusalem

USA ambassador to Israel David Friedman, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, the president's daughter and son-in-law Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and special representative for worldwide negotiations Jason Greenblatt will also attend.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had hosted OIC emergency summit on December 13 at Ankara where most countries had strongly condemned Trump's move. The annual holiday celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem with Israeli victory in the Six Day War.

Road signs directing vehicles and pedestrians to the "US Embassy" were erected on Monday across Jerusalem only days ahead of the relocation of America's mission from Tel Aviv to the US's newly recognized capital.

The last round of peace talks on a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip collapsed in 2014.

As Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat affixed the first street signs directing drivers to the "U.S. Embassy" in the capital, Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat called on foreign dignitaries to boycott the celebratory opening on May 14. "I thank President Trump or making this historic moment come to fruition", he said in a statement released by his office.

Britain had joined 13 other UNSC member states to vote in favour of a resolution calling for Donald Trump to rescind his declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, showing the depth of global opposition to the move.

Israel claims the entire city as its eternal capital.

Surprisingly the global community, including the United States administration, does not recognise Israel's jurisdiction and ownership of Jerusalem. The Palestinian leadership and most of the global community consider East Jerusalem as occupied territory and the future capital of a sovereign Palestinian state.

The U.S. hopes there is still a possibility for peace, however.

According to the Guardian, police and Israeli Defense Forces have increased security sweeps and patrols in the southern Jerusalem neighborhood expected to house the temporary American embassy while construction is in progress.

President Trump has denied that USA officials told Israel's Defence Minister Avigdor Liberman about the request to transfer control of four areas that would become the capital of a new Palestinian state under the U.S. peace plan. On February 23, the State Department announced the new embassy will open in May.
