Liverpool's Gomez to miss Champions League final after ankle surgery

However, Liverpool have now revealed that following successful surgery on his ankle, the 20-year-old has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

The operation means the 20-year-old will be absent from the Reds' remaining two fixtures of the campaign, as well as ruling him out of England's squad for this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.

He looked likely to make the World Cup squad before picking up the injury in the early minutes of England's friendly win over Holland in March.

The 20-year-old defender never fully recovered from the problem he sustained while on global duty with England, and the injury was aggravated in recent Premier League games against West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City.

"However, Gomez will be ready for the start of Liverpool's pre-season training schedule in July following a rehabilitation period", the club added.

Gomez made his England debut in November 2017 against Germany, and has played twice since then.

After five matches in 17 days - including a draining two-legged Champions League semi-final with Roma - Klopp has a full week to prepare for the fixture.

His absence will be a blow for his country, given Southgate's preferred tactic of employing a three-man central defence. I'm going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre season.

Adam Lallana faces a race against time to prove his fitness for the Champions League final against Real Madrid and the World Cup after a hamstring problem sustained five weeks ago.

Tony Cascarino is convinced that Liverpool FC have what it takes to beat Brighton and secure their place in the top four this season.
