DR Congo records four fresh cases of Ebola

However, in the last month, there has been 19 suspected cases of Ebola, with 16 confirmed. These belong to the Equateur Province.

Health Minister Oly Ilunga said seven people with the hemorrhagic fever were hospitalized in Bikoro as of Thursday.

It is DRC's ninth known outbreak of Ebola since 1976. There are various hemorrhagic fevers including Ebola.

Dr Peter Salama, WHO Deputy Director-General, Emergency Preparedness and Response, said: "The first step in containing this outbreak is to understand the extent of transmission, ensure care for people infected, engage communities and trace contacts".

At the start of February, vaccination efforts began in states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, seeking to immunize 19.7 million people against yellow fever, for which cases have been rising since past year, Xinhua news agency reported.

I'd also like to thank the courageous healthcare experts already working on this response, and on broader work to tackle disease outbreaks across the globe to stop these threats reaching our shores.

He said that an emergency operation centre would be set up and chaired by Dr. Babasanya, who actually led "our efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone and Guinea during the outbreak in 2014".

Reuters noted that Ebola is believed to be spread over long distances by bats as the animals can host the virus without dying. Stopping the spread of the infection is one of the only measures to contain the infection at present due to lack of curative treatment and effective vaccines. In the past five weeks, there have been 21 suspected viral haemorrhagic fever in and around the iIkoko Iponge, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a press release.

At least 17 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where health personnel confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD).

World Health Organization has released US$ 1 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies for these activities over the next three months.

The UK Public Health Rapid Support Team is also on standby ready to be deployed to support the response, if required.

A total of 250,000 US dollars has been set aside for outbreak response activities, and more resources are being mobilized, the statement said.
