Kevin Kamenetz, Baltimore County Executive and Democratic candidate for governor, dies

Kevin Kamenetz, the executive of Baltimore County and the leading candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination for governor of Maryland, unexpectedly died on Thursday. "He was transported by the Garrison Fire Station's Medic 19 to St. Joseph, where doctors pronounced him deceased at 3:22 a.m". Contributions in County Executive Kamenetz's memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 405 Williams Court, Suite 120, Baltimore, MD 21220 or to the Baltimore Humane Society, 1601 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136. Until then, the county's administrative officer, Fred Homan, will serve as acting county executive.

Gov. Larry Hogan (R) ordered flags be lowered today through sunset on the day of Kamenetz's interment.

Ervin served one and a half terms as a council member for Silver Spring-based District 5 before she resigned in 2013 to take the position with the Center for Working Families. "I was shocked to awaken to the news of the County Executive's passing this morning", Councilman Todd Crandell (R-7) said in a statement on Facebook. Other gubernatorial candidates released similar statements, praising Kamenetz and saying they were shocked by his sudden death. "He was a dedicated public servant in Baltimore County for more than two decades, and we join with the citizens of Baltimore County and all Marylanders in mourning", he said.

"His absence will shake up the race because he was an important political figure in the state", pollster Mileah Kromer told The Baltimore Sun. "Our prayers go out to his family and many loved ones this morning", Hogan tweeted. Kamenetz is survived by his wife, Jill, and their two children.
