First China-made aircraft carrier starts sea trials: state media

China's first aircraft carrier built entirely in its own shipyard left port Sunday to begin sea trials Sunday in a new show of military muscle.

It is the first time the ship's engine, propulsion and navigation systems would be tested at sea, a year after it first took to the water at its official launch, state media said.

Reports said China is already building its third aircraft carrier in Shanghai.

It has finished the outfitting process, where engineers installed and fine-tuned all of the ship's interior equipment and weapons, the report said. Lai is reported to have been captain of CNS Lianyungang guided-missile frigate, commander of a frigate flotilla and then executive officer of CNS Liaoning aircraft carrier.

Some Chinese media reports, however, said that the new carrier is created to be able to carry 36 aircraft - 12 more than the Liaoning that has been in service since 2012.

Both Chinese aircraft carriers have similar "ski jump" ramps, and closely resemble Soviet style vessels. Once it is in service, it will be able to accommodate China's Shenyang J-15 fighter jets. The Taiwan Air Force tracked and tailed the intrusive aircraft at exceptionally close range.

China's second aircraft carrier will be "modernized" compared to its first, experts said, with a design that's bigger and heavier to allow it to carry more planes.

The new carrier has a conventional propulsion system. The ship's chief engineering commander, Hu Wenming, told the broadcaster the carrier was smaller than USA carriers' Nimitz class.

One of the key differences between Liaoning and the Type 001A is that while the first carrier was meant to be used as a training asset, the new vessel can be used as a front-line combat vessel.

The vessel has more than 3,600 cabins. The new Chinese carrier can neither sale for longer without refueling than the above mentioned USA carriers, nor can it carry as many planes.

Anticipated to be commissioned by 2020, the ship will provide China a 2nd warship to boost its navy as it asserts its claims in the contested South China Sea and looks for to discourage any self-reliance motions in Taiwan.

China only has one aircraft carrier (pictured, the ship at its 2007 launch), which is called the Liaoning.
