Godavari boat mishap: Around 20 still missing, search operations continue

Earlier in the day, Naidu personally monitored the operation of pulling out the boat and into rescue operations. "They had locked the windows and door to escape the rain and had no chance to escape when the boat capsized".

"Because of the strong gale, the boat could not withstand pressure and sunk", he told reporters at the site of accident in East Godavari district. The incident came close on the heels of a boat with over 100 tourists catching fire in Godavari River in the same district on May 11.

He further said that of 44 people, bodies of 12 people have been recovered, while 10 are missing and 22 are safe. He said the government would provide jobs to one member each from the families of the victims and would also make arrangements for free education for their children.

Naidu also asserted that the boat was inspected by officials before it took off. The boat was loaded with cement bags and motorcycles too which has led to the mishap.

The boat apparently belongs to Laxmi Venkateshwara boat services and the owner Khaja Mohinuddeen has surrendered at the Devipatnam police station following the incident, ETV reported. The rescue teams had to cut up a part of the boat to bring out the bodies.

Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Home Minister N Chinarajappa directed officials to send NDRF teams to the accident area.

East Godavari district Collector Kartikeya Misra, Superintendent of Police Vishal Gunni and Prakash, the West Godavari SP, supervised the rescue operations.
