Buffon leaving Juventus, but may pursue a career

Buffon leaving Juventus, but may pursue a career previously reported that Champions League finalist Liverpool are trying to convince outgoing Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon to move to Anfield this summer.

If my future indeed lies off the pitch, it will be necessary to undergo a training course in order to understand the right path to take and what role I could occupy.

Juventus have confirmed that veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini will replace departing goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon as the captain of the club.

The 40-year-old announced he is to leave the Italian giants after 17 seasons earlier today, but did not confirm he is to retire as expected - and Liverpool could be set to pounce, according to The Mirror. Buffon said Oliver should have been more "sensitive" to the moment in the match.

What else was said by Buffon in his farewell press conference?

"I'm having a continual discussion with [Juventus president] Andrea Agnelli, who knows what is happening around me and is a counsellor I don't want to lose". Next week, after a few days to reflect, I shall make up my mind and follow my best instincts. I couldn't do anything else but say those things and I am sorry to have offended the referee, " Buffon told Sky sports.

Buffon added that he is "not someone who carries rancour", but in light of this "apology", it's clear that the Italian clearly still harbours resentment towards Oliver. "I am a competitive animal", he said.

He has made a record 176 appearances for Italy, winning the World Cup in 2006.

Juventus won a league and cup double this season, their fourth in a row, but also suffered a bitter Champions League quarter-final exit against Real Madrid, who won with a stoppage-time penalty. Also as punishment, Juventus was relegated to Serie B but Buffon stayed and helped it win the second division and bounce straight back up. His farewell at global level might come on June 4, when Italy hosts a friendly against the Netherlands in Turin.
