North and South Korean leaders meet again at border

Trump announced earlier this week that he was canceling the planned June 12 summit with Kim.

Bolton had suggested in April that the USA could follow the "Libya model of 2003, 2004", in which Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi abandoned his nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief before being killed in 2011 during a US -backed uprising.

South Korea, a longtime US ally, was not notified before Trump's letter canceling with Kim was made public on Thursday.

"Kim Jong Un thanked Moon Jae-in for much effort made by him for the DPRK-U.S. summit scheduled for June 12, and expressed his fixed will on the historic DPRK-U.S. summit talks", the report said, using the abbreviation for North Korea.

The two leaders met for two hours on the North Korean side of Panmunjom, a "truce village" inside the Demilitarised Zone that separates the two Koreas, said Yoon Young-chan, Moon's spokesman.

Moon will brief the media on the unexpected meeting at 10 a.m. Sunday, his office said.

Photos released by the South Korean presidential office showed the two leaders embracing, shaking hands amid opulent decor and holding intimate discussions, accompanied by just a single aide each.

Kim was with his sister Kim Yo-jong and his top aide Kim Yong chol in charge of inter-Korean affairs.

"We reiterate to the U.S. that there is a willingness to sit down at any time, in any way, to solve the problem", said a top official at the North Korean Foreign Ministry. The meeting between the two would be centered around, if all goes according to plan, the denuclearization of North Korea.

Moon crossed the border to meet Kim at the Tongilgak building in an area of Panmunjom controlled by North Korea.

Trump tweeted Friday morning, a day after he withdrew from the June 12 summit.

The comments reflected a broadly shared perception inside the White House and State Department that the two leaders still want to get together and there will be a meeting eventually.

Also on Friday US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke by telephone with his South Korean counterpart, Kang Kyung Wha, in which he said Washington still wished to have dialogue with Pyongyang. "You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used", Trump wrote.

First Vice-Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan called the decision "unexpected" and "regrettable".
