'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Stumbles With $103 Million Holiday Opening

In fact, "Solo" is now forecast for a four day holiday weekend of $105 million to $115 million domestically. Memorial Day is a risky time to open because theaters are competing with travel plans. That title still belongs to "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", which debuted with $139.8 million in 2007. This is bad news for the anthology film, as its predecessors performed way better during their respective opening weekends. It now holds an A- CinemaScore, along with a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Unfortunately for Solo, the global performance for the film has been fairly weak, so it will have to have long legs in North America in order to turn around what is now a Justice League-style narrative around the film's performance.

Solo: A Star Wars Story had a reported budget of $250m.

"Deadpool 2" slid to No. 2, where it made $55 million from 4,349 screens over four-days.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, "Avengers: Infinity War" tells the story of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy who attempt to stop Thanos, one of the most powerful, insane and evil of all villains in the Marvel universe, from collecting the Infinity Stones.

"Now what should have been either a victory lap after three-straight $1 billion-plus hits or an acceptable mulligan is going to only add to the "Egad, Star Wars is doomed" drumbeat", Mendelson said.

"Book Club" landed in fourth during its sophomore outing. The latest Johnny Knoxville comedy, Action Point, will be released by Paramount in 2,000 theaters next weekend, and Upgrade with Logan Marshall-Green is also set to enter theaters on June 1st.

Meanwhile, Deadpool 2 will earn a projected $53.5 million (GBP40.2 million) in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $218.2 million (GBP186.5 million). Its three-day total was $5 million, while its three-week domestic grosses lands at $40.9 million. As a matter of fact, no film has ever grossed more than $140 million over this particular weekend. The Rogue One installment generated US$30 million in its opening, outside the top 100 movie debuts, according to Box Office Mojo, while The Force Awakens was 41st on that list at the time.
