Melania Trump attends first public event since kidney operation

The late-night funnyman's quips, however, came on the same day that Mrs. Trump was seen sitting next to her husband President Donald Trump during a solemn White House ceremony in which Gold Star Families were honored.

The Gold Star event on Monday was closed to the press, with no opportunity for media photos or video, a decision made out of respect for the military family members, Trump's communications director Stephanie Grisham told CNN.

President Donald Trump joked about speculation that First Lady Melania Trump left him. Four days later, the White House announced that she had been hospitalized to treat a benign kidney condition.

"They say she is perfectly fine and I certainly hope that's true", Colbert continued.

Mrs. Trump had not been seen in public since May 10, when she and the president welcomed home three Americans freed from North Korea.

The event, a private East Room reception for more than 40 Gold Star military families, was not in and of itself an unusual activity for the first lady of the United States.

Public interest in and news media coverage of first ladies exploded during the Obama administration, the first White House to extensively use social media to spread its brand, McBride said.

The first lady took to Twitter last week herself to dispel rumors circulating about her whereabouts. "It's her style and we just have to accept that".

"I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing", Mrs. Trump tweeted. She was, according a tweet Trump sent last week, at the White House, "feeling great".

Mrs Trump, 48, was hospitalised for five days, but her disappearance from the public eye following her surgery led to rumours about her health and marriage.
