Former NBA star Rodman to fly to Singapore for Trump-Kim summit

The diplomatic initiatives leading to the summit started in late April when Kim met South Korean President Moon Jae-in and the leaders of the rival states pledged to end hostility and establish peace on the Korean peninsula.

It also has a golf course for any free time the leaders might have.

"Within the first minute, Ill know", Trump said during a news conference in Quebec as he prepared to depart the Group of 7 summit en route to Singapore, where he is scheduled to meet Kim on Tuesday.

Jenny Town, research analyst at the Stimson Center and managing editor of 38 North, said she expects to see at least some clarification of what the negotiated end goal is and sense of time frame for trying to achieve it.

Many remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon his nuclear programmes. "I hope the first priority of the real meeting is to have Kim stop shooting off missiles and destabilising the region".

President Donald Trump struck an optimistic tone Saturday as he left the G7 summit early for his high stakes summit with Kim Jong Un, telling reporters that his North Korean counterpart has an opportunity for "lasting peace" when they meet in Singapore next week.

The concerns have been voiced on both sides of the aisle in Congress, where top Senate Democrats have sent Trump a letter insisting any deal will be a bad one unless it forces North Korea to comply with a long list of onerous demands. The North Korean leader will certainly bring his own cohort of bodyguards. In 2003, Libya agreed to give up its nuclear, chemical, biological and missile programs to restore its standing in the global community and get sanctions relief.

Mr Kulesza said he was excited about Tuesday's summit and the potential it has to improve the lives of North Koreans.

North Korea's willingness to develop fuel and weapons in secret, to sell nuclear technology and missiles to other rogue states, and its attempts to use its status as a nuclear power as a negotiating tool are features, not bugs, of its defence and foreign policy. Pyongyang's ICBMs have the range to hit the U.S.

The U.S. leader described the summit as a "one-time shot" for Kim, adding he expects the conversation with North Korea to last for more than just one meeting.

Jeffrey Lewis, a USA arms control expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, recently titled an analysis: "Optimism About Korea Will Kill Us All: The first step toward peace is lowering your expectations".

Trump's diplomacy with North Korea has been cheered on by South Korea, whose new leadership is more supportive of engagement with the North than any South Korean government in years.

"He might as well have said, 'Carry on, '" Lee said. After being placed on the list, designated persons are typically unable to use most global financial systems and are forbidden from traveling to the United States.

Trump wants "immediate CVID (complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization), a difficult-to-grasp phrase that would elicit eye rolls from my North Korean counterparts whenever it was mentioned during our encounters".

He said: "I will be on a mission of peace and will carry in my heart the hearts of millions of people all over the world".
