Recent CDC report finds rates increasing

Based on reports, we understand that Mr. Bourdain died by suicide. In more than half of all deaths in 27 states, the individuals had no known mental health condition when they took their own life. Then on Friday morning, CNN's Anthony Bourdain, the chef and storyteller who took viewers around the world in "Parts Unknown", was found unresponsive in his hotel room in France.

Phrases that may be meant to comfort such as, "They're in a better place now", or "They're no longer hurting", can also hurt suicide loss survivors, who might wonder, Schnell said, "Wasn't the place where we are good enough?" It is the 10th leading cause of death in the US, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But the Centers for Disease Control says that suicide isn't just now becoming a problem, rather that it is an ongoing and growing epidemic. "But there are people being lost to it every day and the numbers are staggering", she said.

"Suicide affects us all", Cerel said in the release. But please listen to me- from someone who is telling you that she's been where you are- when I say that SUICIDE IS NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE.

What we say or don't say, and how we say it, makes a difference, according to experts.

According to the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, warning signs for suicide include: threatening or talking about wanting to hurt or kill themselves; looking for ways to kill themselves; talking or writing about death or suicide; displaying hopelessness; expressing rage or uncontrolled anger; acting recklessly or engaging in risky activities; expressing feelings or being trapped; withdrawing from friends and family; showing signs of anxiety and/or agitation; being unable to sleep or sleeping all the time; dramatic mood changes; giving away prized possessions; and having a history of suicide attempts or suicidal behavior.

Writing in USA Today, Liz Szabo with the nonprofit Kaiser Health News quoted Dr. Jeffrey Liebermann, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, who stressed that depression and bipolar disorder can be treated successfully. And above all, don't be afraid to ask if they've thought about suicide. "Same thing for suicide", Lieberman said. Vermont, New Hampshire and ME, all in New England, had among the highest rates of increase in suicides. After all, most of us are beset by stressors. "That will open up a space where they can talk about what's really going on".

Suicide is rarely caused by a single factor.

"Ultimately suicide is often related to a mental illness", Smith said.

Another guideline from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is to avoid saying someone "committed" suicide, as NPR's standards and practices editor Mark Memmott has reminded the newsroom this week. "But before that, thoughts of suicide crossed my mind more than a few times". We are working diligently to prevent suicide.

"These clear steps can lower the national suicide rate", the statement said.

Suicide prevention largely focuses on addressing mental health treatment, the CDC found, suggesting that a wider variety of preventive measures could be taken. "In terms of training mental health professionals, we're not doing a great job".
