KABB in San Antonio reported the driver was believed to be a US citizen, and had been transported to a hospital. The sheriff told the San Antonio NBC affiliate that it was "good police work" that led to deputies being involved in the chase. The agency said multiple arrest were made in both vehicles.

The driver is now in custody with Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Border Patrol vehicles were chasing the SUV immediately before the crash occurred, according to a motorist who witnessed the crash in south Texas and posted video to Facebook shortly after.

This SUV was packed with undocumented immigrants as it crashed trying to escape border patrol. "This is a flawless example of why our borders need to be secure".

Almost 2,000 children have been taken from their parents since the Trump administration announced its "zero tolerance" policy against people entering the USA without legal permission. The vehicle was traveling around 100 miles per hour, the sheriff said.

Thee were 14 people in the vehicle, including the driver and a passenger who were both USA citizens.

One of the drivers attempted to flee the scene and was chased by agents, US Border Patrol said in a statement.

Boy believes the driver was scouting the area to try and pick up immigrants.

The Trump administration has said tougher immigration policies - even separating children from their parents - are needed to deter immigrants from coming to the country illegally.
