Suarez goal in 100th cap sends Uruguay into KO stage

Uruguay struck first in the 23rd minute with man of the match Suarez celebrating his centenary cap in style with his 52nd goal.

By scoring Suarez became the first Uruguay player to score in three consecutive World Cups, once again highlighting his world class ability. Defeat against Uruguay would nearly certainly see them eliminated from the competition, although they also play against Egypt in their final group game.

In a game lacking in chances and intensity, the only goal came from a Uruguay corner - the Saudi goalkeeper Al Owais came for the cross but misjudged it completely and Suarez was waiting at the back post to finish into the empty net.

Saudi Arabia have conceded 14 headed goals at the World Cup and it could have been 15, Martin Caceres heading over in the 68th minute from another Sanchez delivery.

Russian Federation take on Egypt, who lost 1-0 to Uruguay in the first game of the group, later on Tuesday.

"We are more than proud because we've reached the knockout stage at three successive World Cups".

Suarez made a bright start, looking to make amends for his poor performance in the opening 1-0 win against Egypt, firing a left-footed volley from Cristian Rodriguez's knockdown which was blocked by Ali Al-Bulayhi.

They will face each other on Monday in Samara with first place in Group A on the line.

Uruguay showed all their know-how and experience, though, as Atletico Madrid defensive pair Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin helped see out the closing moments easily.

However, Uruguay began to gain control of the match after 65 minutes, keeping a good shape at the back and not giving Saudi Arabia space to maneuver. But they were outmatched by the Uruguayan defence and were under regular threat from Suarez and Cavani.

"There is no doubt that facing the Uruguayan team is hard and that it is known for its worldwide stars, but we are determined to improve our image from the previous match and the joy of the Saudi fans", said Saudi Arabia midfielder Taisir Al-Jassim.
