Cavani fires Uruguay into last eight as Ronaldo dream ends

Although a draw against Iran in Portugal's own final group game very almost turned into an early exit from the World Cup, Ronaldo is nevertheless primed to play a pivotal role; for however long Fernando Santos' side remain in Russian Federation.

The teams will face off at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday in Sochi, Russia, in the 2018 World Cup Round of 16.

Portugal have been dragged to unprecedented heights by Ronaldo over the years, but he now needs help to keep them among the world's elite.

Defeat for the European champions finished Cristiano Ronaldo's hopes of success in Russian Federation just hours after Lionel Messi and Argentina were knocked out, beaten 4-3 by Les Bleus.

"A rivalry with Ronaldo here (at the World Cup) and at a club level are two different things".

Santos' side dominated the match for large portions but were defeated by two excellent goals from Uruguay talisman Edinson Cavani either side of Pepe's equaliser. With the "Fubo Premier" bundle, you will get access to all four of the World Cup soccer TV channels in most markets.

Still, at least Ronaldo managed to, briefly, claim the talking point of this year's competition after his tremendous hat-trick against Spain.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos knew the question about Portugal's dependence on Ronaldo was coming, and said he even won a coffee because of it after making a bet with the team's press officer ahead of Friday's news conference.

"We have a team with many young players and of course we all want him there with us".

"Cavani sustained an injury tonight and we will have to see how that evolves as it's not clear at this stage how serious it is", Tabarez said.

'And I also want to congratulate the organisation of this World Cup, it has been fantastic in every way; the organisation, the security, the atmosphere is flawless and it must be said.

"In five days we have a match and we don't have a lot of time for recovery here", said Tabarez.

The concern going forward will be whether or not Suarez can do it without his strike partner if the injury that saw Cavani limp off with the aid of Ronaldo proves serious.
