Trump Rejects Calls To Abolish ICE: 'Zero Chance, It Will Never Happen!'

They're not alone. Some progressives on the Hill worry that wielding the "Abolish ICE" banner would be a political gift to Trump and his allies, and that Democrats should consider a more nuanced approach. "I have literally never seen Americans show up for immigrants like this", said Jess Morales Rocketto, political director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance, which represents nannies, housekeepers and caregivers, many of whom are immigrants.

Several prominent Democrats have called for the enforcement agency to be scrapped after outrage broke out over President Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policies. "And after ICE is changed as an agency, there will be enforcement of immigration laws", said Jayapal.

"I don't think ICE today is working as intended", Gillibrand said Thursday night on CNN's "Cuomo PrimeTime".

A former spokesman for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it "doesn't make sense" to get rid of ICE despite public criticism of the agency, and that agents "have a rough time with this too" in the midst of backlash over the separation of undocumented families at the border.

Momentum has been steadily building to do away with ICE, which was created in 2003, following this week's upset victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who successfully unseated a senior Democrat in the House of Representatives for the party's nomination. [I] believes that if we are to uphold civic justice, we must abolish ICE and see to it that our undocumented neighbors are treated with the dignity and respect owed to all people, regardless of citizenship status.

She likened the situation to what followed the white supremacist rallies last summer in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dozens of people shut down a government meeting in MI in protest of a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house detainees at a local jail.

"I'm a mom, and I think everyone I know that I've talked to about this issue has had a very visceral reaction", Sharaf said. "Zero chance, It will never happen!" he added.

An Inspector General's report published this week by the Department of Homeland Security, the federal agency in which ICE is housed, found that ICE does an inadequate job of inspecting and maintaining its facilities, and fails to correct poor practices.

Trump seems to relish the prospect of Democrats making the abolishment of ICE a campaign issue. By Friday afternoon, police in Philadelphia had made six arrests outside the city's ICE office amid a heated demonstration, as crowds chanted, "I'd rather go to jail than go to a detention center".

Discussion over eliminating the agency has ramped up this week and, in some cases, is being linked to border issues and the separation of immigrant children from their families.

During my trip to the southern border, it was clear that ICE, and its actions of hunting down and tearing apart families, has wreaked havoc on far too many people. Biden, however, has been critical of Trump's immigration policy as he considers a 2020 run.

De Blasio, who endorsed Joe Crowley in the primary, also noted on Friday that Ocasio-Cortez "is someone who absolutely comes from my wing of the Democratic Party". "Give them points for honesty".
