USA senators on rare visit to Moscow ahead of Putin-Trump summit

The U.S. congressional delegation is scheduled to meet with senior Russian officials amid preparations for a summit between the nations' presidents. "We recognise that the world is better off, I believe, if Russia and the United States have fewer tensions, get along a little better", Senator Richard Shelby said during the meeting with Lavrov at the Russian foreign ministry. "We could be competitors - we are competitors - but we don't necessarily need to be adversaries". We all talk about it a little differently and the president has talked about it in his own way, ' said the official.

"The President hopes that a meeting can help reduce tensions", US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman told reporters on a briefing call set up by the White House. "Indeed, we do not rule out that both Presidents Putin and Trump may have a tête-à-tête meeting at the beginning, if an initial agreement is confirmed and there is preliminary understanding".

Peskov's comments come a week after, Putin told USA national security adviser John Bolton that Russian-American relations "were not in the best shape", during a meeting in Moscow, according to Russia's TASS news agency.

For his part, Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin welcomed the delegation and thanked U.S. ambassador in Russia Jon Huntsman for the "initiative of inter-parliamentary dialogue".

The U.S. and Russia have been at odds over a number of issues including Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Russian actions in Syria and its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

He said the Kremlin was "very satisfied" that the senators were visiting Russian Federation.

However, he took issue with President Trump's statement that he planned to discuss Crimea with President Putin there.

Trump has met Putin on the sidelines of several worldwide conferences, but has not held a bilateral summit with the Russian leader.
