Chelsea FC’s first signing under Maurizio Sarri revealed

Ex-Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri is expected to succeed his compatriot at Stamford Bridge.

Media reports said Conte's departure would take to 85 million pounds the amount Chelsea has spent on paying off sacked managers - nearly the record fee Manchester United paid in 2016 for France midfielder Paul Pogba.

Trophies: Premier League 2016/2017, FA Cup 2018.

Conte, 48, had returned to full pre-season training at the start of the week despite huge uncertainty surrounding his future at the club, but with one year left on his contract the Blues have made a decision to relieve the Italian tactician from his duties in west London.

Conte took training on Thursday morning, but his exit is now confirmed and Chelsea's players had the afternoon off.

The news brings to an end many months of speculation over Conte's future at the club.

Sarri spent a total of three seasons at Napoli, guiding the club to the Champions League in each of his campaigns and establishing them as Scudetto contenders for the first time since the days of Diego Maradona.

Sarri, who comes off the back of a wonderful season with Napoli, had been sacked during the summer but remains under contract with the Serie A runners-up.

Sarri is central to Chelsea's 14th change of coach since Roman Abramovich arrived in 2003, although yet again there will be a costly severance payment to the outgoing coach.

The former Empoli boss is not known as a big spender which might fit with the slightly more modern Chelsea era of tighter spending.

Chelsea's statement announcing Conte's departure totalled just 52 words.

The Chelsea playmaker thanked his boss for his time at the club and wished him the best for the future, as did both Belgian winger Charly Musonda and midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah (now at Watford) on Instagram.
