DHS secretary: Russia's election interference 'attack on our democracy'

Mueller's alleged interest in Stone and WikiLeaks goes to the heart of the US intelligence community's conclusion, released in a report in January 2017, that WikiLeaks weaponized and published damaging information on Clinton provided to it by a hacker from the Russian government.

Nielsen says there's intelligence Russian Federation is using social media to foster "divisiveness" among the American people.

The indictment does say Guccifer 2.0 reached out to someone in contact with the Trump campaign about the "docs I posted" - Stone said on CNN that "I think I probably am the person referred to".

On Friday, a federal grand jury charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking Democratic computer networks in 2016 in the most detailed USA accusation yet that Moscow meddled in the election to help Republican Donald Trump.

This month, the Republicans and Democrats on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee backed the findings of an assessment from U.S. intelligence agencies that Russian Federation tried to interfere in the 2016 election - and acted in favor of Trump and against Democratic Hillary Clinton.

US Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein last Friday said the indictment's timing was dictated purely by the fact that prosecutors had found the information was sufficient to present to a grand jury. Pure stupidity. But it makes it very hard to do something with Russian Federation.

The defendants worked for two GRU (Russia's military intelligence service) units, one of which was tasked to steal information and another to disseminate it.

Communications between Guccifer 2 and WikiLeaks also undercut the contention of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that he did not obtain Democratic Party emails he published from Russian Federation.

Stone's bottom line on WikiLeaks: "I never received anything, including allegedly hacked emails, from WikiLeaks or Julian Assange or the Russians or anyone else", he told ABC News, adding that he "never passed them on to Donald Trump or the Trump campaign or anyone else". Guccifer 2.0 said it would be a "great pleasure" to help.

Members of Trump's inner circle and legal team said they see signals that Mueller may want to avoid a lengthy subpoena battle for Trump's testimony to wrap up his obstruction report and Russian interference probe.

Before Friday, 20 people and three companies had been charged in the Mueller investigation.

Mr. Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said on Twitter that it was time to end the investigation since "no Americans are involved" in Friday's indictment.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia's alleged role in the elections, pushed for the indictments of several former Trump campaign aides, including former campaign chairperson Paul Manafort and former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. The dates and message content match that described in the Mueller indictment.

Nunberg noted that it was more likely Stone believed the emails were actually stolen from Seth Rich, a 27-year-old DNC staffer who was fatally shot on a Washington, D.C. street in the early morning hours of July 10, 2016.

It's believed that through these data breaches, the accused Russian officers leaked classified information and labeled it as "Guccifer 2.0" and "DCLeaks". "The President is fully aware of today's actions by the department", the Deputy Attorney General said.
