Amazon says it’s working to resolve glitches

Despite a rocky start, Amazon says its fourth Prime Day set records as the biggest sales day in its history. It's not clear how that breaks down in terms of revenue. One of the most popular Prime Day deals previous year was a 50% discount on 23andme DNA testing kits.

Whole Foods, included for the first time in Prime Day, figured prominently into the strategy, with members who spent $10 in stores getting $10 to spend on Amazon for Prime Day. Amazon offers the Prime free-shipping program (which includes other perks like Prime Video) in 17 countries: the U.S., Canada, U.K., Spain, Mexico, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, China, the Netherlands, Singapore, Luxembourg, and Australia. Target this morning said its One-Day Sale on Tuesday was its biggest online shopping day of the year, led by small appliances, beauty and personal care items, baby gear and home and tech products. A company spokesman didn't immediately respond to an e-mail. "[This year, ] we tripled our inventory and our sales have more than doubled", he says.

The glowing numbers came even though Amazon was hit with a massive glitch that caused its United States and UK sites to crash at the beginning of the event. Shoppers will have plenty of sales to choose from as other retailers offer promotions to try to take a share of the spending.

Amazon Prime Day was a massive success. After Amazon announced the event, Flipkart responded with its Big Shopping Days sale from 16-19 July.

Consumers' familiarity with Prime Day: Adobe surveyed 1,000 USA consumers, revealing that 32% don't know about Prime Day and another 23% don't shop on it. These findings are part of Adobe's quarterly Digital Dollar report that launched today. Users could access their online shopping cart, but when they attempted to purchase something, they got a note saying, "Sorry, we're experiencing unusually heavy traffic".

The glitch was embarrassing but wasn't likely to put much of a dent in Amazon's sales for the event, analysts said. "And photos of employees' pups successfully mitigated some of the negative sentiment around the online retailer's site difficulties". Doing so means that there will be no payments or charges to your account, but you are still able to enjoy Prime membership benefits for the 30 day trial period.

Prime members bought more than 100 million products, Amazon said Wednesday. Perhaps more importantly, though, was the surge in Prime membership. Prime Day 2017 lasted 30 hours and kicked off at 9 p.m. ET.

Amazon Basics are 20 percent off. Amazon's mid-summer sale runs exclusively for Prime members.
