No hurry on North Korea denuclearisation

"Trump added that discussions related to North Korea took place during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland on Monday".

"We're making progress along the border to get the return of remains - a very important issue for those families", Pompeo said. He acknowledged that could take a long time. "We have no speed limit", the United States president told reporters. There have been no tests.

Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said North Korea's Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol had agreed in earlier talks with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to meet on or about July 12 in Panmunjom with an American delegation over the remains. Trump said that Putin would be involved "in the sense that he is with us".

Trump also tweeted on Wednesday that his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels last week was an "acknowledged triumph", adding that his one-on-one with Putin "may prove to be, in the long run, an even greater success".

South Korean authorities have opened an investigation into a United Nations panel's finding that North Korea transhipped over 9,000 tons of coal, disguised as Russian exports, to South Korean ports in Incheon and Pohang, North Gyeongsang, last October.

During the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June, Trump insisted that Pyongyang should start the process "very quickly", and that "a lot of people" would be sent to North Korea to verify it.

On Tuesday Trump said he had misspoken and that he had complete faith in US intelligence agencies and accepted their conclusions.

A USA official told Stars and Stripes that the North may return as many as 55 sets of remains on July 27, which is the 65th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the war, although that date may change as more talks were needed to finalize the details. Tensions over North Korea's nuclear weapons program had interrupted previous efforts.

"The complete denuclearization is the unflappable, shared goal (of the South and the US) and of the worldwide community", she said.

According to the South Korean unification ministry, the inspection is scheduled to be carried out along the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Friday, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Trump announced after the June 12 summit that Kim had agreed to return the remains of "thousands and thousands" of Americans killed in the 1950-53 Korean war. North Korea has accused South Korea of kidnapping them, while South Korea says they made a decision to resettle on their own will.
