"These things happen, all you can do is try to gather your thoughts and live to fight another day".

The German racer was looking to extend his lead over the defending champion on home soil.

However, Hamilton added: "Just before the kerb I think the steering broke so I think that's the issue".

On an extraordinary day, Hamilton's victory then hung in the balance for close to 90 minutes after he was hauled in front of the stewards for aborting a late pit-stop, cutting across the grass, and re-joining the track.

"It just kept getting better and better and I knew in the last lap I had more in me and I was able to squeeze everything out". "Today is just unbelievable". So, I feel for Vettel because it's his home Grand Prix. "I would always start at the back and would have to make my way through more experienced and faster karts and that's where I learned to do it".

While Vettel and Ferrari made a big deal of winning on Hamilton's home ground at Silverstonea fortnight ago, Hamilton said he had no desire to respond with similar gloating messages after his German win.

Hamilton tried in vain to get his vehicle back to the pits but it proved too much and he was forced out before Q2, meaning he will start Sunday's race in 14th.

"There have been other great ones: Silverstone 2008 was pretty great, but I went off (there) so 99.8", he said.

Rosberg described his former Mercedes team-mate's comeback from 14th to take the win "unbelievable" and expects many more exciting races as the season progresses. It was a sea of red and then you've got a British flag in there.

He had headed into the race eight points clear of Hamilton at the head of the drivers' standings and was poised to leave with a large advantage before the rain turned the race on its head. "I'm very happy", - said athlete. If the stewards find him guilty, he will lose the top position to Bottas and his championship lead margin on Vettel will come down to 10 points instead of current 17points.

Hamilton is now locked in a title battle with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and his title defence suffered a blow at Hockenheim as he was forced to pull over with a loss of hydraulic pressure at the end of the first qualifying segment.

"It's disappointing because up to that point everything was sweet". "I had a small moment with one of the lappers, the Sauber, under braking and Valtteri got past me". But it's much too early in the season to do this.
