Israel To Expand Settlement In Response To Deadly Stabbing

The assailant, later identified as Mohammed Dar Youssef, 17, from the village of Kobar, mounted the security fence surrounding Adam Thursday evening and stabbed two men before being shot to death by a third, who also suffered stab wounds.

In response, the army says it targeted seven Hamas military posts with tank fire.

The Israeli defense minister has vowed to expand controversial settlement policies in the West Bank, claiming that it is the "best answer to terrorism". The army said Friday it had raided the village, questioned a number of his family members and suspended their work permits.

Israelis have faced a wave of Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings, on civilians and soldiers over the past two years but these types of assaults have declined recently.

Lone Palestinian attackers have carried out multiple attacks against Israelis in recent years in the West Bank, Jerusalem and elsewhere. Under worldwide law, all Israeli settlement activities in the occupied territories are illegal.

Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said earlier Thursday that Israel "must pay a high price with its blood" making an apparent reference to the three killed Palestinians.

In Gaza, however, there has been recurrent violence between the Israeli army and Palestinian protesters, in which at least 154 Palestinians have been killed since late March. It follows a stabbing attack by a Palestinian.

Palestinian militant group Hamas said the attack was an act of heroism and revenge for three fighters who were killed in Gaza on Wednesday.

More than 600,000 Jews live in about 140 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Hamas, considered a terrorist organisation by most of the West, seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.
