Virat Kohli mocks Joe Root after run out

Kohli was put down on 21 and 51 by Dawid Malan but he mixed patience with late aggression to reach his first century in England.

The first three wickets fell for eight runs as they slipped to 3-216 with Root's misfortune accompanied by a full-house "send-off" from his opposite number Virat Kohli.

Kohli is widely regarded as one of the best stroke players in the world but his knock at Edgbaston was not about playing strokes as he left more than 40 balls alone.

Kohli's animated celebration of Root's run out was a response to the England skipper's "mic drop" gesture during the ODI series, when he had dropped his bat dramatically to celebrate his hundred.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets for 60 runs in 25 overs while paceman Mohammed Shami had two for 64 in 19.

"I actually think it adds to the whole spectacle of Test cricket, it gives a bit of humour to it, and it makes for a very entertaining series for something like that to happen so early on, so we'll see how things pan out over the course of the five Test matches". Bairstow soon departed scoring 79 runs off just 88 balls.

England, on Wednesday managed to amass an under par total of 285 runs for the loss of nine wickets at stumps, day one of the ongoing first test match against India in Birmingham's Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Serves this outside off, it moves away, Curran flirts with it and gets an edge which Karthik doesn't drop.

Nevertheless, it was England who had the most regrets come the close after Root won the toss on a typically good Edgbaston pitch.

Ashwin, brought on as soon as the seventh over by Kohli, struck with his 11th delivery when he bowled Alastair Cook (13), England's all-time leading Test run-scorer, with an excellent ball that pitched on middle and hit the top of off stump.

Stokes, introduced after lunch, showed why he is such an important part of this England side with an aggressive spell. First, Bairstow played on off Umesh Yadav (1/56) and then Ashwin trapped Jos Buttler lbw for a two-ball duck as England were rocked out of their comfort zone. It was a surface that actually did a bit all day, There was seam movement at the back end of the day, and that fills our bowlers with confidence.
