Mendocino Complex grows to become 2nd largest in state history

The Mendocino Complex fire is now the largest wildfire in modern California history, scorching more than 283,000 acres and frustrating firefighters as it continues to leap across natural and man-made barriers in Lake County. Two firefighters and four other people were also killed.

California has long had problems with fires during the summer but climate change has been blamed for the hotter weather and extremely dry vegetation which have aided them.

Trump initiated the spat on Sunday when he tweeted that the fires "are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws", which cause water to be "diverted into the Pacific Ocean", and prevent trees from being cleared.

"Tonight fire crews will try to take advantage of the lower temperatures to increase suppression and hold current containment lines", Cal Fire said.

The Donnell Fire burning in the Stanislaus National Forest and Tuolumne County has scorched 12,000 acres and is 1 percent contained.

McLean said firefighters are using the direct approach to prevent the fires from reaching urban areas along Clear Lake while retreating in national forests "and letting the fire come to us".

More than 14,000 firefighters were battling the blazes across the state.

Parts of Yosemite National Park will remain closed indefinitely due to the Ferguson Fire burning near the park, according to the National Park Service.

Both fires began on July 27, according to Cal Fire.

A seventh death has been reported in the battle against the Carr Fire. Officials say the flames threaten more than 9,000 structures.

Farther north, crews gained ground against a deadly blaze that has destroyed more than 1,000 homes in and around Redding.

Mandatory evacuations are in place throughout Shasta and Trinity counties.

"The soldiers will be outfitted with wildland fire Personal Protective Equipment and all of the gear they will need to serve as wildland firefighters", U.S. Northern Command said in a statement. Trump friend Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) has claimed in the past that Communists are stealing water from farmers in the area.

"The problem here is he's not acknowledging the role climate change is playing in California's fire problem, and the scale of the problem is far beyond anything he's talking about doing", Westerling says.

Cal Fire online records show a growing number of wildfires in recent years.

The amount of work on this fire is truly tremendous and expensive, with California rapidly running through the money budgeted for the summer fire season.

The last time active-duty military personnel were mobilized was in September 2017, when 200 soldiers from JBLM were mobilized to help battle the North Umpqua Complex wildfires in OR for 30 days, NIFC said.

But with the additional aircraft freed from the River Fire, Blankenheim said "that area is starting to look up, and we're starting to feel like we're getting ahead of the game".
