Allardyce: Man Utd 'held to ransom' in transfer market

The ongoing Paul Pogba transfer saga at Manchester United shows no sign of ending with Thursday's 5pm deadline.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the Premier League opener between Manchester United and Leicester on Friday, Mourinho was in a defensive mood about the criticism his United team got for finishing behind a massive 19 points behind Pep Guardiola's record-breaking City side.

Burley said: "It's incredible".

"The theatre of dreams has become the theatre of nightmares and a place were people do dream but only because they have fallen asleep watching united".

They also bought in left-back Joe Bryan from Bristol City, plus three players on loan - goalkeeper Sergio Rico from Sevilla, Atletico Madrid forward Luciano Vietto and United's Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

The club believe they have delivered over the course of the last two windows on the agreed targets with around £73m invested this window in Fred, Diogo Dalot and goalkeeper Lee Grant, as well £35m for Alexis Sanchez in January.

Across town from Old Trafford, Manchester City have signed Daniel Arzani from Melbourne City, with the Australian youngster expected to go out on loan.

Fans have been disappointed in the owner's apparent refusal to seriously back their manager as Mourinho had made it clear how many players he wanted to bring in.

"When you repeat 1,000 times that my relationship with my players is not good, it's a lie, repeated 1,000 times is still a lie". The agenda here is real!

Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire were considered overpriced by United's board, even at lower values.

He shakes his head as he adds: "But to bring nobody in?"

Manchester United begins its season off on the right foot, with World Cup-winner Paul Pogba scoring alongside Romelu Lukaku. "This is what you've got". I depend on them. Particularly as a manager, for irrespective of who has done it, you're going to be responsible. Then you might have half a chance.

'I see [Pogba] very well but we need words with that small group to see if they can give us a hand. "I mean, it's early for that, but I am painting a picture. I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues but I keep feeling the second [place] last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game". "Now it is time to prove it, to fight for the top spots, and I think this is the season to do it".

"This is Man United", said Merson.

The former Juventus midfielder was among a handful of United players who only returned to pre-season training on Monday, after their countries advanced to the World Cup semi-finals.

Fair comment, or agenda-driven Manchester United vitriol?
