Premier League predictions: Telegraph writers select their bankers for the season

'My view is that first of all is hard for me to believe we finished second when I listen, when I read, not much but sometimes I do, is hard to believe that we finished second because you are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, ' Mourinho said during today's press conference.

The closest any club had come to not signing a player was in the summer of 2003, when Leeds United signed only Jody Morris for free.

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has made his prediction for the 2018/19 season and told BBC Sport he expects Manchester City to retain the title.

"I am not confident", Mourinho said of United's chance of new signings ahead of Friday's Premier League opener against Leicester. Is not an opportunity, is a match, an important match, we would prefer to have a couple more days but decision was to be first to play and that's it.

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".

"Like any big club, they need some silverware - in his first season at Old Trafford, 2016-17, Mourinho won two trophies - the League Cup and Europa League - but he won nothing last season".

"You also have to consider that Liverpool are City's Kryptonite".

Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic are among six players ruled out of the game with injury, with captain Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero and Diogo Dalot also sidelined.

"They returned on Monday, trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today so you can imagine they are not really fit and ready but we have needs", Mourinho said. A club that's spent the money they've spent in the past few seasons and the players they've got [should be challenging].

"The target is Leicester match and the tactics to be changed in Championship Manager you can just press a button", he said.

"I have to focus on the players that are available".

The Red Devils coach has cut a sullen figure throughout pre-season with the former Chelsea boss unable to hide his dissatisfaction with Brazil global midfielder Fred being his sides only high profile signing.
