Thiem makes US Open presence felt with straight-set win over Anderson

"He's a real hard-working player", Federer said of Millman. This was the worst part of the match for Roger who had to play against three break points in the fifth game as well, fending off all three with nice attacks and closing the game with another forehand victor to move 3-2 in front.

Yes, Roger does reach the ball and yes, Nick Kyrgios was just as shocked as the rest of us. He roared through the next seven games, breaking the crumbling Australian to take the opening set then breaking him twice more in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Thiem prevented a rematch of last year's U.S. Open final by eliminating 2017 runner-up and No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (2). It was the on-a-full-sprint, drop-shot-retrieving, flick-from-a-few-inches-off-the-ground, forehand-around-the-net-post, jaw-dropping victor that Federer conjured up a few games from the conclusion of the 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 tour de force in the third round Saturday.

"I don't know what anything has to do with Madison and my match".

As Federer opened up a double break lead, Kyrgios could be heard saying "I need to hire a coach" in the direction of his support team with the 20-time Grand Slam champion finishing off the second set in emphatic fashion. The ensuing victor didn't go over the net - it went around.

The Swiss great came up with an age-defying down-the-line victor on Kyrgios' advantage point at 3-3.

"I am going to try to be as competitive as possible and really battle out there and not play anyone's reputation", he said.

"I'm not looking around who was winning or who was losing", she said.

The man, who has made sure fans got their money's worth over the years with his lobs, tweeners and SABRs among other awe-inspiring shots, himself acknowledged that the down-the-line victor was a "special shot". I'm feeling great now, too. Maximo Gonzalez, Thiago Alves and Radek Stepanek had all managed to take a set away from the defending champion but he scored three easy wins to reach the last 16 where he survived a huge scare against Igor Andreev, prevailing over the Russian 6-7 7-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 in three and a half hours. I have beaten him before.

Only No. 3 seed and defending champion Sloane Stephens remains among the top-four seeds.

"I knew how important that first set was", he said. "Just magic from the Swiss Maestro!" I think there is a lot more to be done and there is a lot more to be, I mean, explored. I think I can do a lot more.

After 14 appearances at the slams, his best showing so far is a quarter-final run at this year's French Open.

"You have to be the consistent guy rather than being the flashy guy just because he has a tendency to throw in an odd shot that you just don't normally see on the tour", Federer said, adding his approach was to play, "super consistent and make him hit that one extra ball because when you play like [that] it can work against you". "I hope that it's a little bit more comfortable on hard court, but I'm not sure".
