Longtime Dem loses to left-wing challenger in primary upset

"Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that MA will be well served", the 66-year-old said.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch of MA has fended off two Democratic primary challengers, including a Boston-based software engineer.

Teeming opposition on the left to Trump has fuelled primary wins for insurgent, women and minority candidates in Democratic primaries ahead of November's crucial midterm elections.

Pressley called for defunding the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, which helped her draw support from Massachusetts' popular attorney general, Maura Healey, who's gained a national following for repeatedly suing President Donald Trump in an attempt to block his policies on immigration, gun control and other issues.

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley greeted family, friends and supporters after beating Rep. Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District.

"I knew we would be essentially, alone", Pressley said during her victory speech.

Ayanna Pressley is set to become the first African-American woman elected to the US Congress in MA, following a primary upset.

Ayanna Pressley's reaction to her historic upset victory in a Democratic primary for a Massachusetts House seat quickly went viral on Tuesday.

"It's not enough for Democrats to be back in power", she said at her election night celebration.

But both Pressley and Capuano admit there's likely no difference between them in terms of the way they'll vote in Congress, and moreover, neither one has expressed outright opposition against Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.

"This is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our democracy", Pressley said Tuesday while campaigning in the district.

If Democrats take the House in November, the state delegation will be in line to lead two committees: the House Rules Committee with Rep. Jim McGovern and Ways and Means with Rep. Richard Neal. Kennedy, the grandson of the late U.S. Sen.

And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in US history. She joins a number of other black women who've won their primaries this year, including Stacey Abrams, who's running for governor in Georgia, Lauren Underwood, running for a congressional seat in IL, and Jahana Hayes, who's also running for a seat in Congress from CT. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C.; Mark Sanford, R-S.C., and fellow 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y.
